Why Your Child Needs Omega Fish Oils

Research done with infants has shown that brain function requires certain nutrients including Omega-3 fatty acids to develop, help with their mental activities and concentration. During learning especially when a young brain is developing, brain neurons are growing new connections.

Gopnick et al. (1999) describe neurons as growing telephone wires that communicate with one another. Following birth, the brain of a newborn is flooded with information from the baby?s sense organs. This sensory information must somehow make it back to the brain where it can be processed. To do so, nerve cells must make connections with one another, transmitting the impulses to the brain. Continuing with the telephone wire analogy, like the basic telephone trunk lines strung between cities, the newborn?s genes instruct the "pathway" to the correct area of the brain from a particular nerve cell.

If you have kids we all know that getting them to take fish oils, either because of the taste or the inability to swallow a pill, may keep them from obtaining the critical nutrients for their brain to develop properly. And, even though we try, it is sometimes quite a task to get them to eat the way they should. So, supplements are pretty much one of the only ways to make sure they get extra nutrients, especially if they aren't eating oily fish or fresh veggies and fruits.

There are chewable fish oils on the markets, but they usually have to be purchased separately. The multiple children's vitamins on the market are lacking in ingredient quality. There are some green multiples, but they don't contain fish oils. When I was looking for my son, reading the labels on the big market brands, and seeing that they all contain Sucrose, High Fructose Corn Syrup and the most crappy of all; FD&C Blue #1, FD&C Red #40, FD&C Yellow #5. Dyes and lack of fish oils have been indicated in many studies with children that have ADHD.

I found one multiple vitamin with fish oils and D that I will give my child, it's SmartyPants™ Multiple all-in-1 with Omega-3 Fish Oil and vitamin D. They don't have dyes, and only use organic cane sugar, and they use black carrot juice, annatto and tumeric (all good) for coloring. They are also free of gluten, wheat and dairy. All of their products contain no yeast, wheat, milk, eggs, gluten, salt, peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish, artificial colors, artificial flavors, or salicylate's.

An added bonus is the fact that they are partnered with Healthy Child whose mission is to "ignite the movement that empowers parents to protect children from harmful chemicals" and you can be a SmartyPants™ Angel which donates a one-for-one nutrient grant to Vitamin Angels for every bottle they sell.

"Vitamin Angels's mission is to mobilize and deploy private sector resources to advance availability, access and use of micronutrients, especially vitamin A, by newborns, infants and children in need. Vitamin Angels reduces child mortality and childhood blindness worldwide by connecting essential nutrients, especially vitamin A, with infants and children under five. Essential nutrients enable young immune systems to fight infectious diseases, helping children attain good health and the opportunity to lead meaningful and productive lives".
